PRO-STRIDE APS

Pro-Stride Autologous Protein Solution (APS) is a proprietary dual-device system whose output produces a concentrated solution of cells, platelets, growth factors, and anti-inflammatory proteins.

Pro-Stride combines the positive effects of IRAP and PRP for use in damaged tissue (such as ligaments and tendons) and synovial structures (such as joints, tendons sheaths and bursas).

Pro-Stride Joint Therapy

Pro-Stride is an autologous product, meaning that it is generated from the horse’s own body (blood). It is produced stall-side using a kit supplied by the manufacturer. The entire process of production takes about 25 minutes to complete.

The Basics of Tissue Inflammation and Damage

Interleukin-1, also known as IL-1, and tumor necrosis factor alpha, also known as TNF-alpha, are the key pro-inflammatory proteins called cytokines which must be blocked to prevent further damage to injured tissue. In joints, these inflammatory cytokines bind to cell surface receptors and promote the process of cartilage breakdown which ultimately leads to joint instability, pain and further cartilage damage.

There are several naturally occurring inhibitors (anti-inflammatory proteins) of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1 and TNF-alpha. These include the interleukin-1 receptor antagonist protein (IRAP) and Soluble tumor necrosis factor receptors. All of these are highly concentrated within Pro-Stride APS.

Joint Physiology

Normal Joint Physiology

The NORMAL Joint

The biochemical equilibrium of the intrarticular environment is constantly regulated by the synovial membrane, synovial fluid and articular cartilage. Alteration of any one of these elements inevitably compromises the physiologic status of the others.

Together, the synovial membrane and synovial fluid form the BLOOD-SYNOVIAL BARRIER which is a sophisticated, dynamic system that regulates articular flows to and from the joint.

Abnormal Joint Physiology

The DAMAGED Joint

Osteoarthritis progression is driven by both mechanical and biochemical factors. During an inflammatory response (resulting from joint injury), increased permeability of capillaries within the synovial capsule permits leukocyte (macrophage) penetration into the articular cavity. Once in the articular cavity, leukocytes release cytotoxic enzymes and pro-inflammatory cytokines. The resulting imbalance between inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines can drive osteoarthritis disease progression and associated pain.

Pro-Stride Preparation

By acting to restore the balance of inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines, Pro-Stride not only provides pain relief but also promotes regeneration of tissues within affected joints, thereby improving the horse’s prognosis for future performance (in the long-term). At The Atlanta Equine Clinic, Pro-Stride therapy is often implemented in high-motion (i.e. clinically-significant) joints to reduce pain, improve function, and promote regeneration of damaged tissues. By using Pro-Stride, we can avoid the deleterious effects imposed on cartilage by intraarticular corticosteroids (i.e. standard steroid injection) when appropriate.
